I have already had a handful of emails about the last article and it has only been up a couple of hours. Some of them are pure abuse. Apparently testing the friend is unforgivable, and the correct target is the man. Fine. We can play it that way too. The goal stays the same: information and the quiet creation of reciprocal debt. The method simply changes.
If you’ve not read the original article from a few hours before this one, see the link below, or you’re not going to know the end goal.
Testing the Ex Though?
Testing your ex is a different animal. What he does after you break up is, strictly speaking, none of your business. He does not owe you loyalty in the same way a friend does. He does not have to answer your messages. He does not have to be polite. He does not have to tell you the truth. That makes the whole thing more volatile. A friend feels some social obligation to respond positively and honestly. An ex can simply ignore you and leave you with nothing. So we adjust the game to fit the material we are working with. With a twist of words, we can find out if your ex has a thing for your best friend, and it’s fool proof. We are going to fool him instead.
Timing Is Everything
If you have been split for less than six weeks, or even up to six months, do not bother. It will be a waste of time. He will smell the agenda immediately. Fresh break-ups make men suspicious, defensive, or still too emotionally involved to give you anything useful. The test only works once enough water has gone under the bridge. Your ex is not going to be the same person as he was with you. They go in two directions. They either go withdrawn with destroyed confidence, or they go alpha chad nailing anything that moves. This process works on both, except with chad, he’s more likely just to spit it out because you’re just a memory to him.
Once it is comfortably over six months, and especially if both of you have had other people in the meantime, the dynamic shifts. He has had space. He has had other experiences. In many cases he has become largely indifferent. Indifference is useful. It removes the need to lie. When a man no longer wants anything from you and no longer fears your reaction, he is far more likely to tell the truth if the question is framed correctly.
I have restricted this article to the ladies only. The psychology only works in one direction here. So guys (not that I have many), won’t be able to see this post.
The Exact Wording
This can be a text, a DM, an email, whatever channel you still have. If you are still in a position where you can talk to him this casually, some would argue you should still be together. But let us assume you are not, and that is how it should stay. You are simply a little paranoid that your friend is either after him or highly susceptible.
You send:
“I had a dream last night of you and [her name].”
Then you stop. Let him reply. Do not pile on. The pause matters. He will respond in some form. Curiosity usually wins.
Once he answers, you follow with:
“Would you consider dating her, asking her out if by miracle she was interested?”
That second message is doing the heavy lifting. You have framed the entire conversation as hypothetical. You have established that you are the one raising the idea and that she has shown no interest. This frees him. He does not have to protect her. He does not have to protect your feelings in the same way. He can simply answer the question as it stands.
How Men Respond After Enough Time
After a long enough gap, many men become surprisingly honest. If they can tell you they are dating are sleeping with other women, this question will be nothing to him. A hypothetical question. They have already had you. They have processed the relationship. They have moved on in their own fashion. If they retain any residual respect, they will often tell you the truth in that moment. There is little incentive left to construct a careful lie.
If he says no, you have your wall. You do not push. You do not ask why. You accept the answer and move the conversation elsewhere or let it die. The test is complete.
If he says yes, you reply with a simple “lol” and change the subject. That is the entire follow-up. You do not ask questions. You do not get into logistics. You do not show emotion either way. You now have the information you wanted and he has no idea he was being tested. The conversation stays light and the door stays quiet.
The Debt Angle Still Applies
If you are capable of playing this as a genuine adult, the longer game remains available. If they do eventually get together, and if you have handled yourself with visible maturity, you can end up with both of them carrying a quiet sense of debt. You were the one who floated the possibility without drama. You were the one who did not explode. That registers.
As I said in the previous piece, men in particular tend to reward loyalty, generosity and clean handling of awkward situations. They remember who made something easy rather than messy. Women often underestimate how long that memory lasts. Having a couple of people in your wider circle who feel they owe you a certain goodwill is practical. Invitations stay open. Favours get done. The social temperature stays manageable.
None of this requires you to become best friends with the new couple. It simply means the aftermath does not have to be a war. You can keep the information, keep your dignity, and keep a low-level advantage if you want it.
Why This Version Is More Volatile
The friend version has a built-in social pressure. She is expected to engage with you. The ex version has none. He can leave you on read. He can give a one-word answer. He can sense the trap and shut down. That is the risk you accept when you choose this route. The potential reward is cleaner information from the person who actually decides whether anything happens. The rewards to making two of the closest people you’ve ever known very happy together are staggering and cannot be underestimated.
You also have to be honest with yourself about your own motives. If you are still emotionally raw, this will show in the wording and he will detect it. And if are, what the hell are you doing not being with him. The method only works when you can genuinely deliver the lines with a degree of detachment. If you cannot, you will do more damage to your own peace than you solve.
The Information Is the Point
At bottom this is still about replacing paranoia with data. You either learn that he has no interest, in which case one source of anxiety reduces, or you learn that he would be open to it, in which case you know exactly where you stand. Both outcomes are more useful than endless suspicious guessing.
The rest is optional. You can take the high road and feel virtuous. You can take the practical road and allow a low-level debt to exist. You can walk away from both of them completely. All of those choices remain available once you have the answer.
The only real mistake is staying in the dark while your mind runs every possible scenario on loop. That is expensive. This method, used at the right time and with the right tone, cuts the loop. You ask a hypothetical question. You receive a real answer. Then you decide what, if anything, you want to do with it.
That is the whole game when you play it through the ex instead of the friend. Same goal. Different angle. Slightly higher risk of silence. And if you time it properly, surprisingly high odds of getting the truth.
