I need you to clock something before you open Hinge like it is a harmless little slot machine. If he is a man with a For You page, he has already been in a classroom. He did not enrol. Nobody handed him a reading list. He just existed as a male-coded account and the app started teaching. Twenty-three minutes. That is not a punchline I nicked off The Coven. That is a timer from researchers with blank phones and the patience of saints.
Dublin City University set up sockpuppet accounts on TikTok and YouTube Shorts. Fresh handsets. No watch history. No angry uncles in the likes. Some of the accounts were written as ordinary lads into football and games. Some were written as already nosing around alpha content. Did not matter. Every male-coded account got masculinist, anti-feminist, manosphere sludge within the first 23 minutes. Proper manosphere stuff by minute 26. On TikTok, one of the generic 16-year-old accounts got it in under nine.
Nine minutes. That is less time than it takes me to queue for an oat-milk flat white in Dalston and argue about the extra shot.
By the time those phones had chewed through about 400 videos, two or three hours of thumb work, 76 percent of the TikTok recommendations and 78 percent of the YouTube Shorts ones were what the team called toxic. Andrew Tate showed up hundreds of times. The algorithm did not wait for a manifesto. It waited for a gender tick box.
So when a man sits across from you in a Hackney wine bar and asks your body count like he is checking an MOT, that is not a quirky icebreaker. That is coursework.
It does not start with a speech. It starts with a gym clip
People still picture radicalisation as a basement and a document. Cute. Offline. The actual on-ramp looks like a bloke doing lying tricep extensions and a voiceover about discipline.
Later work that watched real TikTok histories, not just fake accounts, found the same shape. Gym. Fits. Money talk. How to talk to her. Then, quietly, how she is. How women pick. How the top 20 percent of men get everything and you are being farmed. How feminism ruined dating. How you should never put her on a pedestal. How she is not yours, it is just your turn.
None of that arrives wearing a warning label. It arrives wearing a hoodie and a protein brand deal. That is why your mate’s boyfriend can swear he is not political and still talk like a forum.
I have sat through this in person. Nice jumper. Knows the name of the natural wine. Then halfway through the second drink he says, casual as anything, that women are the gatekeepers of sex and men are the gatekeepers of commitment. He says it like he invented weather. I say, mate, that is a talking point. He looks wounded. He thought it was just how the world works.
That is the trick. The pipeline does not sell itself as politics. It sells itself as realism. You are not becoming a misogynist. You are becoming someone who sees.
Bare convenient, innit.
What the feed does to a first date
Once you know the syllabus, you can hear it in the wild.
He will ask how many people you have slept with before he asks what you do for work. He will call that honesty. He will tell you attraction cannot be negotiated. He will say high value like it is a blood type. He will talk about frame. He will call your boundary a shit test. He will say if you wanted to, you would. He will have a theory about why you left the last one that does not involve the last one being a melt.
Women have started filming the other side of this. There is a whole genre now where she asks him, mid date, to show her his For You page. Not to nick his passwords. To see the weather system he has been standing in. Cosmopolitan clocked it this year and the comments split between you go babe and that is a violation. I am in the first camp, obviously. If he can audit your sexual history over olives, you can audit the classroom that taught him to do it.
Watch what happens in his face when you ask. A decent man shrugs and hands it over. A man mid-pipeline gets fragile. Fragility is data.
Same with the little phrases. High value. Hypergamy. The wall. Pair bonding. 80/20. AWALT. If those words fall out of him like punctuation, he has been studying. You are not paranoid for noticing. You are literate.
This is not just vibes. The polling is grim
King’s College London and Ipsos asked 23,000 people across 29 countries, including Britain. Thirty-one percent of Gen Z men agreed a wife should always obey her husband. Thirty-three percent said the husband should have the final word on important decisions. Twenty-four percent thought a woman should not look too independent. Twenty-one percent thought a real woman should never initiate sex.
Boomer men, the ones we were told were the problem, came in far lower on the obey line. Thirteen percent. The lads who grew up with the internet did worse than their dads.
Sit with that for a second. We did the assemblies. We did the consent workshops. We did Believe Women on a tote bag. And a chunk of the boys came out the other side thinking obedience is a personality trait he is owed.
You can feel that on the apps. Dating got more partisan. Political affiliation is a deal breaker now, not a cute debate for date four. Surveys keep finding the same split. Most young women will not date a man who is not a feminist. Most men do not care about the same filter. That mismatch is not women being picky for sport. That is women treating world view as a safety check, because it is.
Heteropessimism is what we named the hangover. Women going, I like men, I am just tired. Tired of the mental load preview on date two. Tired of weaponised incompetence dressed as I am just bad at planning. Tired of being asked to rehab a stranger who has been mainlining content that says your independence is the problem.
Having a boyfriend got called embarrassing in some corners for a reason. Not because love is lame. Because a lot of heterosexual dating started looking like unpaid care work plus a risk assessment.
He will say it is just jokes
They always do. Banter. Dark humour. You cannot say anything any more.
I grew up in Basildon. I know banter. Banter does not come with a reading list about female solipsism. Banter does not need you to rank your sexual market value. Banter does not teach a 16-year-old that kindness is beta and cruelty is frame.
The DCU team also found the content does not stay in the dating advice box. Reactionary right stuff. Conspiracy. A pile of anti-trans sludge riding along for the journey. Once the account watched one manfluencer video, the tap opened. That is how you get a man who started on gym tips and three weeks later has a take on your reproductive rights that he swears he arrived at independently.
Independently. Sure, hun.
The platforms make money either way. Outrage keeps you scrolling. Lonely men keep you scrolling. Women arguing in the comments keep you scrolling. Nobody at head office is losing sleep because your Saturday night got weird.
Dating companies can put out a press note about courtship making a comeback while the same culture is teaching boys that courtship is a tactic. Cute.
How you actually clock it without becoming the FBI
I am not telling you to raid his camera roll on date one like a copper. I am telling you to stop calling it a vibe when it is a vocabulary.
Ask what he watches when he cannot sleep. Ask who he thinks is funny. Ask what he makes of Tate, and do not accept I do not agree with everything as a full sentence. Everyone who is in it says that. It is the hall pass.
Ask who does the thinking in his last relationship. Not the bins. The thinking. Who booked. Who remembered. Who soothed. If he cannot answer, he has never looked.
Watch whether he can be told no without turning it into a lesson about your wound. Watch whether he needs you smaller to feel steady. Watch whether your job makes him proud or itchy.
And please, for the love of god, stop treating deradicalisation as your romantic labour. You are not a social worker with a fringe bang and a situationship. If he is mid-pipeline, that is a him problem and a platform problem. It is not a project for a woman who already has a job and a therapist who has given up on her sleep schedule.
If you want to look at the phone, look. If he calls that controlling, notice the double standard. He wanted a number from your past. You want a sample of his present. One of those is gossip. One of those is pattern recognition.
The bit the manosphere hates hearing
Women are not a market. We are not a strategy. We are not a boss battle you win with frame.
The content tells him we are calculating, hypergamous, cold, interchangeable. Then he meets a person who is tired and funny and a bit late and has a mum in Essex who still does a Sunday roast, and he cannot hold both ideas at once. So he picks the one that makes him feel informed.
That choice is politics. Not left or right like a badge. Politics as in: who do you think is allowed to be full. Who do you think owes whom. Who gets the last word. Who gets believed.
When I say your date’s algorithm is politics, I mean the feed is building the man who then builds the date. You are not walking into chemistry. You are walking into the aftertaste of two hours of short-form certainty.
Some of them clock it and climb out. I have met those too. They are awkward about it, which I like. Shame in the right place is a moral compass. The ones who laugh and say that is just how women are? That is your exit. Do not debate. Do not write a thread at 1am trying to save him. Delete. Block. Tell The Coven. Eat a roast. Live.
What I want you to do with this
Send this to the group chat before the next round of Hinge. Not as a scare pamphlet. As a decoder ring.
If you are a man reading this and feeling attacked, good question to sit with: attacked by whom. Me, a journalist in a hoodie with blue nails. Or the machine that decided your loneliness was a product category.
You can close the app. You can mute the manfluencers. You can get a hobby that is not ranking women. You can be embarrassed by the version of yourself that needed a stranger on the internet to explain girls to you. Embarrassment is available. Use it.
If you are a woman and you have been gaslighting yourself that you are too sensitive because he only said one weird thing, I am telling you the one weird thing has a family. It has a bibliography. It has an algorithm that can assemble the family in less time than a commute.
Twenty-three minutes. Then aftershave. Then a table. Then a question that is not really a question.
You do not owe that date a fair hearing. You owe yourself a working smoke alarm.
Watch this space. I am not done.
