Why I’m Done with Mankeeping
I woke up this morning and the first clear thought in my head was that I am finished with it. Properly finished. Not the dramatic kind of finished that lasts three days and then folds the second someone decent texts. The quieter kind that settles in and starts rearranging your standards. I am done with mankeeping.
What Mankeeping Actually Is
Mankeeping is the unpaid, often invisible work of managing a man’s emotions, logistics, ego and basic functionality so that the relationship or situationship can continue in a way that feels acceptable to him. It is the reminding, the soothing, the translating of ordinary adult expectations into language he can tolerate. It is the softening of your own needs so they do not sound like criticism. It is the constant calibration of tone, timing and delivery so that a simple request does not turn into a sulk or a shutdown.
It shows up in small ways at first. You become the one who plans. You become the one who initiates the difficult conversations. You become the one who notices when he is in a mood and adjusts yourself around it. You start carrying the mental list of what sets him off and what keeps him stable. Over time the list gets longer and your own preferences get quieter. That is mankeeping. It is domestic and emotional labour disguised as love or patience or being a good woman.
Why It Is Bad for Women
It is bad because it trains you to abandon yourself in increments. Every time you swallow a need to keep the peace, you teach both of you that your needs are optional. Every time you manage his reaction instead of stating your position clearly, you reinforce the idea that his comfort ranks higher than your clarity. The cost is not dramatic at the beginning. It is cumulative. You look up after months or years and realise you have built an entire dynamic around preventing his disappointment rather than expressing your own.
It is also bad because it is endless. There is no point at which the mankeeping is complete and you get to stop. The requirement regenerates. New moods appear. New sensitivities surface. New reasons why this particular week he cannot be expected to show up properly. You become the permanent buffer between him and the ordinary demands of being connected to another person. That buffer position is exhausting and it is almost never reciprocated at the same intensity.
The deeper damage is to your own sense of what is normal. After enough mankeeping, basic reciprocity starts to look like a favour. Consistency starts to feel like a personality trait rather than a minimum standard. You begin to congratulate men for doing the bare amount while you continue doing the excess. That distortion follows you into the next connection and the one after that.
The Last One Was a Ghost
Admittedly the last bloke I saw was a ghost. I barely saw him. Whole weeks could pass with nothing but the occasional message that led nowhere. I told myself it was low pressure. I told myself I liked the space. What I actually had was the absence of mankeeping because there was almost no man there to keep. Obviously, he wasn’t mine either, it was more of an arrangement. But then I found most of my friends were DMing him too, because I can’t keep my gob shut. He literally just picks the ones he wants, ghosts the rest, and we’re just supposed to put of with that nonsense. What’s happened to us? It’s everywhere, on dating apps, all the girls are thirsty for the top 5% of all men in the dating pool. Where have we gone wrong? Body autonomy and high standards has backfired on us in a major way.
And having “arrangements” with a guy, although may guarantee you get orgasms on tap, it’s not very good on the confidence. You can’t go to dinner, can’t go for walks, it’s all very shallow and empty. If it’s just the orgasms you want, and you’re married or have a boyfriend sitting at home on playstation, then yes, sure, that’s for you. But I want more. I want it all.
It’s not a solution. It is just a different problem. Some middle ground would be great. Presence without the requirement that I manage his entire emotional climate. Attention without the tax. I know it exists because I have seen other people claim it. I just seem to keep missing it in my own life.
All I Want Is Decent Sex
I just want decent sex in my life. That sentence feels almost embarrassing to write because it is so basic. Decent. Not cinematic. Not spiritual. Just competent, attentive, and finished when both people are actually finished. Why is that so difficult to locate?
I am not asking for fireworks every single time. I am asking for a man who understands that my orgasm is not a pleasant surprise or a bonus level. It is part of the event. I am asking for someone who does not treat the whole encounter as a race he is trying to win before his own focus disappears. The fact that this still has to be requested, explained, or carefully negotiated is ridiculous. It is 2026. The information is freely available. The body parts involved have not changed. And yet here we are.
The Three Types I Keep Finding
The Nice Guy
The first type is the really nice guy who is wet and too gentle. He means well. He checks in. He is polite about everything. In bed he is so careful that the whole thing feels like it is happening under glass. There is no edge, no heat, no sense that he is willing to take a proper lead. Everything becomes a question. Is this okay. Does this feel good. Should I stop. The tenderness is real and it is also deeply unsexy after a while. I end up doing the emotional equivalent of sitting on my hands so I do not accidentally look ungrateful for the softness.
The Chad
The second type is the angry, self-absorbed one. He is rubbish. He is done in five minutes. The entire encounter runs on his timetable and his tension. There is no curiosity about what might work for anyone else. There is only the quick, almost aggressive pursuit of his own release and then the immediate shift into post-sex indifference or irritability. You can feel the selfishness in the way he moves. Afterwards he acts as if something has been accomplished. For him it has. For me it has not. These are the ones who make you stare at the ceiling afterwards and wonder what you are doing with your life.
The Emotionally Dead
The third type is the really great one who is emotionally blank. He can be excellent in bed. He can be consistent in orgasms. He can look like the answer on paper. Then you make one mistake, one misread, one moment of ordinary human mess, and you are gone. There is no repair process. There is no conversation that leads anywhere. The drawbridge goes up and stays up. The same competence that made him attractive turns into a wall. You are left with the sense that you were being assessed the entire time and simply failed the exam without knowing the criteria.
I got “Banned”, his exact words, cold as ice, door shut. Banned! And the the annoying thing, he’s of such skill, he can say such ridiculous a thing with clout. Banned, for fucks sake. How utterly embarrassing and belittling. Older guys are fucking ruthless. Annoyingly, I know if he text me now, I’d cave and be there. I know nothing about him, I don’t know what his kinks are, what turns him on, what movies he likes, favourite food, never seen him drink or eat, his eyes are dead, there’s nothing in there, just a magic mouth, everything else, nothing. The arrangement was cold, precise and locked in so hard that I couldn’t get anywhere near him emotionally.
I rotate through these three with depressing regularity. The gentle ones, the selfish ones, and the blank ones. None of them require me to do the full mankeeping shift, yet none of them give me the straightforward thing I am actually looking for either.
I Am Really Tired
I am really tired of it, guys. I mean properly tired. The kind of tired that sits in your bones and makes ordinary hope feel heavy. I am tired of explaining. I am tired of translating basic needs into softer language so they do not bruise anyone’s ego. I am tired of leaving encounters that should have been simple feeling more alone than when I arrived.
Part of me just wants to beg and spend whatever money is required to secure the thing I want. Hire the expertise. Book the reliability. Remove the uncertainty by paying for it outright. Then the other part of me asks why that should be necessary. Why is basic adult reciprocity and decent sexual attention still sitting in the luxury category. What is going on when a woman with ordinary standards feels like she has to consider commercial solutions just to feel sorted in her own body and her own time.
This Morning
I felt like ending everything when I woke up this morning. Not in the dramatic, final sense. In the quieter sense of wanting the entire noisy question of men and effort and disappointment to stop. I just want to be happy. I want the ordinary version of happy that comes from being able to rely on another person without having to manage them around the clock. I want to stop performing patience for people who are not actually trying.
I am having coffee with the girls later. I will put some of this in front of them and see what they say. They have their own versions of the same exhaustion. Sometimes the only thing that helps is hearing that you are not uniquely bad at choosing or uniquely demanding for wanting what should be standard.
Build-a-Bear for Men
There should be a Build-a-Bear workshop, but for guys. You go in, you pick the base model, and you add the features you actually need. Emotional steadiness. Sexual competence. Consistency. The ability to repair after a small conflict instead of disappearing. A setting that allows him to take a proper lead without tipping into selfishness. Another setting that allows tenderness without turning the whole thing into beige.
You would leave with something functional instead of having to excavate these traits one disappointing relationship at a time. The fact that this sounds both ridiculous and deeply appealing tells you everything about how low the current baseline has sunk.
I am done with mankeeping. I am done with the soft language and the endless adjustment and the quiet hope that this time the man will simply be an adult without supervision. I want the middle ground between ghost and full-time emotional project. I want decent sex that does not require a project plan. I want to stop waking up already tired by the question of whether any of it is going to improve.
If that makes me difficult, so be it. The alternative is continuing to carry weight that was never mine to carry in the first place. I am putting it down.
