I think I’ve properly messed myself up over this date and I don’t even know why I’m letting it happen. He said yes. Just like that. I texted him yesterday, something casual but not too casual, asking if he fancied grabbing dinner when I get back, and he came back with a simple “yeah alright”. No exclamation marks, no extra words, just yeah alright. Like it was nothing. Like I hadn’t been thinking about it for days before I even sent the message.
We’ve been chatting for months now. Proper chatting. The kind where you start off light and then it gets deeper without either of you really noticing until you’re already there. We’ve laid in bed together. He’s seen me naked. I’ve been loud for him, bratty, called him names when he teased me until I couldn’t think straight. He’s kissed me in that slow, controlled way that made me want to scream and beg at the same time. And yet this stupid little date has got me pacing around my hotel room in California like a teenager who’s never been touched.
It feels different. That’s the bit that’s throwing me. Before, everything between us was easy in the wrong way. Convenient. Low stakes. I could text him when I wanted, ignore him when I didn’t, and he’d still be there with his calm little replies or his single emojis when he couldn’t be bothered. I thought that was all it was. A useful thing. Something that scratched an itch without asking for anything real in return. But now there’s a date and suddenly my brain is doing backflips.
I’m used to men lunging. I’m used to the ones who can’t keep their hands off, who text back in seconds, who make it obvious they’re desperate to see you again. This one doesn’t do any of that. He’s measured. He lets silences sit. He doesn’t chase. And for some reason that’s making me more nervous than any of the eager ones ever did. It’s kind of hot, if I’m honest. The fact that he’s not tripping over himself to impress me. The fact that he agreed to the date like it was just another thing on his list rather than the highlight of his week. It makes me want to work for it. And I don’t usually have to work for anything when it comes to men.
It’s been four or five years since I properly dated anyone. I’ve had situations, I’ve had the useful tools, I’ve had the ones who made me feel wanted for a night or two. But actual dating? The kind where you put effort in and show up and let someone see more than just the version of you that’s good in bed? That’s been off the table for a long time. I told myself I didn’t need it. That I was better off keeping things light so nobody could get close enough to fuck me over the way the last one did. And now here I am, nervous as fuck over a drink with a man who already knows what I sound like when I come.
I keep asking myself why he feels so intimidating. I’m the woman. I’m the queen. I’m the prize. That’s what I’ve always told myself. Men should be the ones sweating over whether I’ll say yes. But with him it’s backwards. He’s got this quiet control that makes me feel like I’m the one being tested. Like he’s already decided he’s interested enough to say yes to a drink but not interested enough to make a big deal out of it. And that’s messing with my head more than I want to admit.
I want to look after this one. That’s the scary part. I don’t usually think like that. I don’t usually care enough to want to protect something before it’s even started. But there’s something about him that makes me want to keep him. Maybe it’s just that he’s not like the others. He doesn’t lunge. He doesn’t perform. He just is. And that’s rare.
If I don’t take him off the market soon, someone else might. That thought keeps creeping in. He’s a good one. The kind of good that doesn’t come around often once you’ve been burned a few times. And I’m the one who’s been keeping things casual for months while he’s just been… existing. Answering when he feels like it. Being useful when I ask. And now I’m the one nervous about a fucking dinner like I’m the one who has something to lose. I don’t even know what he eats.
Am I being stupid? Probably. I’ve spent years telling myself I don’t need this. That I’m better off on my own or with the convenient ones who don’t ask for more than I’m willing to give. But the thought of losing him before I’ve even tried properly makes my chest feel tight in a way I haven’t felt in a long time. I want to see what happens when it’s not just texting and the occasional meet that ends with me naked and him in control. I want to see what he’s like when there’s no bed nearby. When it’s just us talking properly, with clothes on, in public, like normal people who might actually like each other.
The nervousness isn’t going anywhere. I know that much. But maybe that’s the point. Maybe the fact that he doesn’t make it easy is exactly why I should show up anyway. I’m not used to feeling like this and I don’t like it, but I also don’t want to keep pretending I’m fine with the low effort version of whatever this is. He said yes. That’s enough to start with. Now I just have to work out how to stop my brain from spiralling before I even get on the plane home.
This one isn’t a long one. Just needed to get something down.
I haven’t eve got a picture for it. Can’t be bothered to piss around with AI tonight. I just wanted to vent.
It hasn’t helped to be honest.
