I have sat at the table while he does the maths like he is chairing the UN. Eighteen pounds each. I paid for the Uber last time so we are even. He looks proud. He has solved gender.
Then we go home and I am the one who knows when the lease ends, when his mum’s birthday is, when the bin men come, when he is in a mood, when we have not had sex because he has not spoken all week and now wants a medal for noticing. Fifty fifty. Sure.
The bill is the easy bit
Money is visible. That is why men love it as a proxy for fairness. You can screenshot a transfer. You cannot screenshot the fact that she is running a household in her head while he is free to just live there.
Mental load is the tab that never closes. Who needs what. Who is running out of milk. Who has a dentist. Who is drifting. Who has not booked the train. Who will remember that his sister does not eat fish. He calls it nagging when the tab spills out of her mouth. I call it unpaid management.
Helping is the other con. He helped with the washing up. He helped put the child to bed. You help in someone else’s house. This was meant to be his house too. If he is a guest in the labour, he is not a partner. He is a lodger with kissing rights.
Weaponised incompetence clocks in right on time. I am just bad at that. You are so much better at planning. If I do it I will get it wrong. Yes, Darren. You will get it wrong until she stops asking, which was the plan.
Equality is not a receipt
I am not against splitting a bill. I earn. I like my own money. I do not need a man to buy my dinner to prove I exist. What I will not do is let him use a £24 pasta to purchase the rest of my nervous system.
The 50/50 discourse on the internet is a trap with two rooms.
Room one: he should pay because he is the man. That one comes with a leash. Provider language is very romantic until it is leverage. I paid, so I pick. I paid, so you owe softness. I paid, so your job is a hobby.
Room two: we split everything, so stop asking me to think. That one comes with a clipboard she still holds. He wants the feminism that saves him money and none of the feminism that makes him responsible.
A fair relationship can look like many things. She earns more and he does more at home. He earns more and the money is shared without a sermon. They split the bill and split the brain work. The shape is negotiable. The hiding is not.
Ask who would notice first if the household stopped being managed. If the answer is her, you do not have 50/50. You have a woman with a boyfriend who has a card.
Therapist is not a pet name
She becomes the place he empties himself. Bad day. Bad boss. Bad parents. She listens, translates, soothes, then walks him back to the idea that he is good. When she has a bad day he says have you tried going for a walk. Or he goes quiet because feelings are a lot.
That is not intimacy. That is a one way clinic.
Hily clocked women walking off men who sneer at actual therapy. Of course they are. If he will not talk to a professional he will talk at her, and she will bill herself in sleep.
Emotional labour is the extra shift. She monitors the temperature. She picks the moment. She raises the thing nicely so he does not feel attacked. She absorbs his shame so he can stay the nice guy in his own head. Then he tells his mates she is always on at him.
On at him. As if the bins had a union.
Project manager of a life she did not apply for
The calendar is the tell. Whose phone has the birthday reminders. Whose notes app looks like a small business. Whose brain holds the social life, the admin, the repairs, the friends they are neglecting.
Competence is how she got hired for this job she never posted. He liked that she was organised. He liked that she had her shit together. Then he outsourced his shit into that same togetherness and called it chemistry.
I have watched women leave over this more than over affairs. The affair at least has the decency to look like a crisis. This just looks like marriage. Or a flat share with extra steps. Divorce lawyers have been saying it for years. Not enough partner. Too much mothering.
Single can be lonely. Single is also a house where the project manager gets to put the clipboard down.
What 50/50 would actually look like
He knows the bin day without a briefing. He books something. He asks his own mother how she is. He can host. He can notice the milk. He can start the hard conversation. He can be wrong without becoming the victim of the evening.
He does not keep a running tab of favours like a petty accountant of love. He does not say I did the dishes so I have done my feminism for the week. He does not need a parade.
And if he wants traditional roles, he can say that with his chest and put money, security, and respect on the table in a way she can leave if she has to. What he cannot do is traditional labour for her and modern money for him. That is not a relationship. That is a scam with better lighting.
Venmo is not a personality. A split bill is not a moral system. If she is still the calendar, the clinic, and the project manager, you did not invent equality. You invented a cheaper date.
